Arbor Day was April 28 this year. The national holiday celebrates trees.  But we think other arbors should be celebrated as well.  Arbors are leafy, recessed areas. They can also be the bar or shaft that holds or supports a spinning cutting tool. So, let’s celebrate the slitting saw arbor.  Heck, let’s celebrate general purpose arbors and ultra precision arbors too.  Let’s make today All Arbor Day!

slitting saw arbor

The Slitting Saw Arbor

The slitting saw and the slotting saw need an arbor that keeps the blade steady. This is especially true if you are running at higher speeds.  Try to avoid making deep slits in one pass.  You might get better results adopting the peck cycle used for micromachining.  The slitting saw arbor can hold your blade on the vertical or horizontal, but it can’t protect the blade from heating up and fouling if you run too fast.

Because many cuts with a slitting saw are deep, the slitting saw arbor has an extra long reach.   They are the NBA players of the saw arbor world.

Slitting saws get up close and personal with their work. So, slitting saw arbors must get the cutter as close as possible.

The slitting saw arbor is one hard working dude.  Let’s say “Hurray” for the slitting saw arbor.

The Ultra Precision Arbor

While the slitting saw arbor may take the slow route, the ultra precision arbor is all about speed.  High speed cobalt and carbide saws need a steady arbor. They provide extra support and prevent cutter slippage.  Their weldon shank and hub configuration provides the rigidity necessary to accommodate small tools. Oh, and they need to do all this for high speed CNC applications.

You might find an ultra precision arbor hard at work engraving, micromachining or even grinding. You won’t find them complaining; they will just be doing their job.  Hurray for the ultra precision arbor.

The General Reach Arbor

The slitting saw arbor is a specialist.  The general reach arbor is the exact opposite.  This unsung hero holds all of the other saw blades.  They absorb vibrations, get the cutter close to the work piece and do it with rigidity.  A hard-working arbor doesn’t chatter. It is testament to the virtue of hard work.  Day in and day out it keeps the blade from straying.  Hurray for the general reach arbor.
