Happy Labor Day from Sierra American Multi-Systems. The maker of saw arbors for machinists celebrates the American worker. Machinists are vital players in the US labor force. Heck, if it weren’t for one machinist, we might not even celebrate Labor Day.
Matthew McGuire, member Local 344, International Association of Machinists, Paterson, New Jersey thought American labor needed recognition. He was secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. Matthew proposed the holiday in 1882. Then, Matthew made it happen. On Tuesday, September 5, 1882, it appeared that the scheduled parade would be cancelled. They didn’t have marching music. Well, it was none other than Matthew McGuire who ran across the lawn, announcing to the men disbursing for lack of a band that two hundred marchers from the Jewelers Union of Newark Two were getting off the ferry. And, they had a band.
A Labor Day Parade
With band in place, the procession started. There were 700 men in the first of three divisions of Labor Day paraders. The final reports of marchers ranged from 10,000 to 20,000 men and women going through lower Manhattan. The New York Tribune reported that: “The windows and roofs and even the lamp posts and awning frames were occupied by persons anxious to get a good view of the first parade in New York of workingmen of all trades united in one organization.”
At the end of the parade, they held a picnic at 92nd Street and Ninth Avenue. It set the standard with speeches, cigars, and kegs of lager. Matthew the machinist got the first Labor Day off to a great start. He set the standard for celebrations in the years to come.
Labor Day started with one machinist.
