The latest data is out on the monthly Manufacturers’ Shipments, Inventories, and Orders and the news continue to be good. Sierra American Multi-Systems, the fly cutter and all things CNC company that supports American manufacturing, celebrates the good news. Manufacturing creates jobs. Not only in the industry but all up and down their supply chains. It impacts the entire economy. That’s good for everyone.
Orders and Shipments
According to the Census Bureau, orders were down slightly by 0.7 percent to $493.6 billion. But shipments were up. Unfilled orders decreased 0.5 percent to $1,171.1 billion. Way to go getting that stuff out the door!
Shipments of manufactured durable goods, up following two consecutive monthly decreases,
increased $0.9 billion or 0.3 percent to $254.2 billion. Even better news? Machinery led the increase, $0.3 billion or 1.0 percent to $33.4 billion. That’s three of the last four months for machinery.
Every mill, fly cutter, drill press and CNC tool shipped means someone is going to work. They’ll be working in US shops and factories making more equipment and goods.
A possible trade war with China looms. That might suppress some. Let’s see what happens in the next few months. In the mean time, celebrate the good news!
The Importance of Manufacturing
Manufacturing is important to the American economy. It’s taken it on the chin in the past, but is steadily recovering. That’s good to know because manufacturing punches above its weight when it comes to economic impact.
Manufactured goods generate demand for goods and services from other sectors. These sectors range from energy and natural resources to construction for new factories. Accounting, engineering, and software grows with manufacturing.
The value that manufacturing contributes to GDP is far more than the value of the finished good produced. Manufacturing’s GDP contribution doesn’t include the goods and services it consumes but are produced elsewhere in the economy. Manufacturing is responsible for a large share of the demand for goods and services produced in the United States.
