Crash test dummies may not be the smartest tools in the shed, but even they know certain tricks of the CNC trade. Even they know quality micro drill adapters when they see them. Any good tool should be dummy proof. If you feel like the dummies have one up on you, here’s what you should know about micro drilling and the need for a micro drill adapter.
Micro Drilling Is Different
To micro machine effectively you need to use high-speed spindles with low run out. You also need rigidity. If it isn’t rigid the contours will change as the force changes. That means you don’t get the results that you set up to achieve. That’s a waste of machine time, human labor, and material. Crrraaaassshhh
You need more than just the right machine and drill. You need the right collet. That’s because toolholding technology for micro drills is as important to the operation as the machine tool. You need a high precision collet hand clamped to the spindle to insure accuracy. Automatic toolchangers are great time savers, but they can be inaccurate. When you are micro machining, small inaccuracies aren’t small.
Every CNC dummy knows this!
Pay Attention to the Details
Successful micro drilling requires attention to detail. While all operations in a CNC shop require attention to detail, some operations have more margins for error. This is not one of those operations.
The first detail is the drill material itself. Use only the highest quality drills with the shortest cutting flutes possible to do the job. High speed steel is better than carbide unless the work piece material itself requires carbide.
Secondly speeds and feeds are critical. The feed rate must be controlled. It is critical that the drill not be pulled into the work piece. If the drill gets pulled in you can kiss that bit good-bye. You will probably break your drill. It’s best to use an RPM under 3000. High RPMs shorten the working life of the cutting edges of the drill.
Use the Best Micro Drill Adapter to Hold Your Drill
Use an adapter that puts you in complete control. Sierra American Multi-Systems manufacturers micro drill adapters that feature:
- Double shielded bearings
- Sensitive fingertip controls
- “O” tapper design to work with keyed and keyless chucks
- Precision ground construction
- Hardened pin drive design
Sierra American makes every micro drill adapter right here in the USA. You can’t go wrong supporting quality US manufacturing.
Be careful. Some suppliers sell inferior micro drill adaptors made in China from cheap material. You can’t risk ruining your work and slowing production because you got ripped off by a cheap tool. Insist on Sierra American Multi-Systems brand by name.
